Our CEO, Neil, recently met with the Chancellor of Oxford University, Lord Hague, and Professor Jo-Anne Baird of Oxford’s Department of Education for a substantive discussion on education policy — specifically around the topic of assessment.

The meeting forms part of a wider and significant research project in which UCEC is engaged, and brought together senior figures whose expertise and perspectives are central to the work. Assessment sits at the heart of some of the most consequential debates in education today — shaping how learners are measured, how institutions are held to account, and how policy is designed to reflect both. It is a topic that demands rigorous, evidence-led thinking, and the conversation with Lord Hague and Professor Baird delivered precisely that.
Neil noted that a number of insightful and valuable points were raised during the discussion — contributions that will no doubt inform the direction of the research project as it develops. Professor Baird, whose work at Oxford’s Department of Education has long been at the forefront of assessment research, brought particular depth to the conversation alongside Lord Hague’s considerable experience at the intersection of politics and policy.
“Superb meeting to discuss education policy around assessment with the Chancellor of Oxford University, Lord Hague, and Professor Jo-Anne Baird of Oxford’s Department of Education. This is part of a significant research project; some insightful and valuable points were raised.”
