Henan University Professors Overseas Training Programme 2025

In June, UCEC welcomed a delegation of professors from Henan University to the UK for an intensive overseas training programme focused on higher education leadership, institutional management, and the practical implementation of teaching theory. The programme was designed to foster mutual learning between UK and Chinese education systems, reinforcing the importance of international collaboration in shaping the future of universities.

Over the two-week programme, participants engaged closely with academic and institutional environments at both University College London and the University of Oxford. Sessions led by scholars and education specialists at the UCL Institute of Education introduced perspectives on university governance, faculty development, and contemporary approaches to educational leadership. These discussions provided a comparative lens through which participants could reflect on evolving management practices within their own institutions.

Complementing these sessions, Oxford-based engagements offered insight into the broader ecosystem of academic culture and knowledge stewardship. Visits to historic learning spaces and academic societies highlighted how traditions of scholarship, dialogue, and preservation continue to shape modern education. Participants explored the role of intellectual exchange and institutional heritage in sustaining academic excellence, themes that resonated strongly with their own professional contexts.

A particularly valuable component of the programme was a visit to a UK state school, where professors observed how teacher education principles translate into classroom practice. This experience illustrated the relationship between policy, theory, and implementation, offering concrete examples of how educational frameworks are enacted at the school level. The visit sparked thoughtful discussion about how similar integration might be strengthened within participants’ home institutions.

The programme also featured a keynote session by UCEC Senior Consultant Sir Michael Wilshaw, former Chief Inspector of Schools in England. His insights into accountability, standards, and leadership in education prompted wide-ranging dialogue about institutional improvement and the role of leadership in sustaining quality. Conversations extended beyond policy to address the human dimension of educational systems, including professional culture, mentorship, and the long-term development of educators.

Throughout the programme, discussions emphasised the reciprocal nature of international learning. Participants reflected not only on what could be adopted or adapted from UK practices, but also on how their own expertise contributes to global conversations about higher education. This exchange underscored a central theme of the programme: meaningful collaboration depends on both input and output, learning from others while sharing institutional strengths.

By the programme’s conclusion, delegates had developed a richer understanding of comparative education systems and leadership models, alongside new professional relationships that support ongoing collaboration. The insights gained are expected to inform faculty development, management practices, and pedagogical innovation within Henan University, with benefits extending to students and academic communities alike.

UCEC remains committed to facilitating programmes that encourage dialogue, reflection, and shared growth across educational cultures. Initiatives such as this reinforce the value of sustained international partnership, ensuring that knowledge exchange continues to strengthen institutions on both sides.
